My sister is pregnant and we are having trouble coming up with a boy name. Her son now is named Jackson and we kind of like the city theme. For a girl we have picked Berlin or Sicily. The boy names considered are Memphis, Rome, and Casius or Lucian (not cities).
What do you think of the baby name Memphis?
Memphis as a boy's given name, it's not bad. I had to say it to myself a few times to get use to it. Of course with questions like this I always wonder what is the kid's family name. And with a boy how the first and last name fits together is really important because he'll keep that name through life as girls have the option of changing their name when they marry.
I also like Sicily as a girl's name.
The other names are more hit and miss.
Names have a funny way of growing on you. When our two sons were born we had a list of best choices and our worst choices. On our worst choice list we had Harrison Mackenzie James. I've bantered that name around with a few of my writer friends and now plan to use it for a character's name in one of my stories.
Reply:memphis sounds like a stripper. there is a porn star named memphis monroe. i thought that name sounded familiar.
Reply:I think Memphis is a really cool name-- I was actually considering it at one point. For a girl I like Berlin better than Sicily. Also, Georgia (as well as being a U.S. state) is an Eastern European country if she would like that for a girl. I'm sure Paris is a no-go, but I've heard girls named London (and Brooklyn is a bit common at this point!). Other city names to try:
Dublin
Monaco
Bordeaux
Milan
Cyprus
Vienna
Sofia (capital of Bulgaria)
Venice
Florence
Munich
Cardiff
American/Canadian cities:
Olympia
Helena
Monroe
Regina
Casper
Odessa
Abilene
Augusta
Raleigh
Reply:Memphis evokes images of Egypt. It has a very pleasant combination of sounds, but also definitely labels a person - when people hear his name, they will assume that he is black. Whether that is a good or bad thing, I do not know - it is just something to consider.
Reply:i don't like it
Reply:How about Memphis Belle after the first B-17 to survive 25 missions during WWII?
Reply:I think it's a bit much
Reply:My friends dogs name is Memphis. He is a chocolate lab.
Reply:I don't care for Memphis but I do like Casius. For a girl I like Cecily spelled this way.
Other city suggestions:
Brooklyn
Taylor
Austin
Dallas
Madsion
Addison
Adrian
Dakota
Bailey
Bristol
Cadmus
Carlyle
Cheyenne
Clinton
Dayton
Houston
Kain
Trenton
Troy
Reply:rome is cute but the other are a little out there
Reply:One of my friends likes the name and if you think he won't have problems with it later why not.
Reply:I like city names....
Memphis...
I'd go with Lucas over Lucian
Reply:The only name I like is Denver--I know 2 Denvers and I think it is such a cool name and they do too!
Not a big fan of Memphis though...sorry! It seems "hokey" with Jackson.
Reply:Paris is a much better name for a boy, but that's only my opinion. Go with what you like.
Reply:Yuck. Stick with a more normal name.
Reply:The city theme is interesting, but Berlin or Sicily are not especially attractive girls names. London, Savannah, Miami, or for states, Jersey, Georgia, even Louisiana or Alabama.
For boys, Lucian is fine, or for city names, Dallas, Austin, Francisco or Trenton. Not too keen on Memphis tho, unless the city actually has special meaning for you otherwise.
Reply:I think any city name is unfair to the child. His whole life he will be asked, are you from Tennessee? Which, to some is redneck/hillbilly country, hence making fun of him will happen.
He will always be labeled and teased, no matter what "city" you choose. Buy a baby name book. You will find better choices there.
Reply:Sounds like you are from the south. Menphis well why not
Reply:That's stupid.
Why not try Salt Lake City or Vancouver?
Jeez-o
Whatever happened to normal names?
Reply:i like memphis but not the other 3, for the girls i dont like either one. for girl city names i like savanah, or phoenix which works for a boy or a girl.
Reply:Ummmmm.. NO. Why not go all out and go with the San Francisco? It is just silly to mark a child for life like that.
Reply:Not too keen on Memphis but i love the city thing too. I like Miami, Paris and Dakota for a girl and Roman, London and also Dakota for a boy x
Reply:I love the idea of Memphis...its awesome! the only other of the 4 choices i would ike are Casius..b/c for some reason i feel like Rome and Lucian..are girlish?
Memphis lee
Memphis Spencer
Memphis Grant
Memphis Russel
Memphis Marshall
Memphis James
Memphis Sherman
Memphis Brody
Reply:Memphis is an awesome name. I like it! It reminds me of Elvis Presley.
Reply:Sounds rediculous. Why does he need an extravagant name like that? What's wrong with Dave or Matt or something normal? Berlin?? Give me a break!
Maybe it's because I'm english, we don't really give our children laughable names like americans do.
Champ Bailey? hahah.
Reply:i dont like memphis too much.
i do however like rome.. or roman?
for a girl i like sicily better. I actually do like that name its pretty for a girl..and unique. i wouldve never thought of it!
i do not, however, like Berlin!
These are just my opinions though and whatever your sister picks Im sure will be fine!
